Medical Terms Single Parents Should Know

by admin on April 25, 2011

If you are like most people out there including myself, then medical insurance is probably one of those things that you know you need bit, don’t fully understand it.  If you are a single dad (father) or any type of single parents then it might help to have a little better understanding of some certain terms because you are not only caring for yourself but also are caring for your family and there is probably not another adult around to help you make some financial choices.  All of these decisions will end up on you and that will include what type of insurance to purchase.  So we have prepared some terms that can help you along your way to choosing the right medical insurance so you hopefully won’t need to seek some financial help as well.

Now one of the first terms that you have probably heard very often and not know what it meant is HMO.  Now this stands for health maintenance organization.  Now what HMO’s can provide is employers and persons with a stable fee for their medical services.  Everyone whom is included in this package will pay the same amount, regardless of the number of appointments scheduled at the doctor’s office.  All of your health related assistances will be from doctors within your HMO.

Another acronym that you may have heard just as much as HMO is PPO.  Now what this stands for preferred provider organization.  What it means is that there is a group of different providers that have agreed to work with your medical insurance provider under its current terms.  If your medical insurance provider works with a PPO then you will need to one of their doctors or there will be a significant increase in the amount of money that you will pay for medical care.

PCP stands for primary care provider.  This will be someone that you will go to for the most basic of medical needs.  Some insurance companies will require that you declare a PCP that is in their network for doctors.  These doctors are usually like overseers and they will refer you to any sort of specialists that you may need after seeing them first.

A deductible is an amount of money that you will have to pay out of your own pocket before your medical insurance will kick in.  Now it doesn’t mean that you are going to have to pay all of the deductable before insurance starts to help because there are some programs out there that that will provide some financial help for you to cover the costs without ever using the deductable.  For the most part though concerning any sort of major medical situation, the deductable will be the amount that you will need to pay for.

Finally, the last term we will cover is co-pay.  This is referred to as the amount that you will have to pay for each doctor’s visit.  The amount can be different depending on your insurance company and in some cases it also will go towards your deductable.

In closing, there are many other terms that are used in the medical insurance field but, the terms mentioned in the article above are some of the terms that you will hear most often and impact you directly.  Please always do your research about terms if you do not understand their meaning.  A little research can be the difference between needing some financial help or financial assistance and not needing any at all.
